1. Objective

In recent decades, due to global warming and air pollution, the use of renewable energy has become a must. Renewable energy is the one that replenishes naturally and consistantly and is collected from renewable energy resources including wind, sunlight, the water movement, and also geothermal heat. However, thermal energy is generated and stored in deep layers beneath the earth. The term geothermal power is used for generating electricity from geothermal energy. Geothermal energy initiates from the heat contained within the Earth since the planet’s formation, from the radioactive decay of minerals, and also from solar energy that is absorbed on the surface [1]. Geothermal heating is the immediate use of geothermal energy for some heating applications. Required technologies to use geothermal energy include dry steam power stations, binary cycle power stations, and flash steam power stations. Similarly, we have two types of geothermal energy forms namely Liquid-dominated plants and Enhanced geothermal systems. Geothermal electricity generation is currently in use in 26 different countries. The current study is an explanatory study case of the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project. This is the first geothermal power project launched in the UK and It is located near Redruth in west Cornwall, and is part-funded by the Cornwall Counciland European Regional Development Fund. This project has two deviated wells including an injection well to a depth of 2,500m and also a production well to a target 4500m depth. Despite the deceleration due to the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic the United Downs project has witnessed several thrilling milestones in drilling completion, comprehensive well testing, and signing contract for completing the first Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for geothermal electricity extraction and usage. In the following sections we will provide a detailed description of well and drilling process currently active in site.
